This week's edition is on mattering at work, which got me wondering, "How many people think their job contributes to their life's meaning?"
Turns out this number is only 17% and has been declining. Employees spend half of their waking hours at work, and they are more engaged when they think their work is meaningful.
The good news is that there are ways to bring more meaning to the workplace, starting with a simple "thank you."
I hope you enjoy today's read!
Mattering at work
"People want to know that they matter to those around them and that their work matters. Knowing you matter has been shown to lower stress, while feeling like you do not can raise the risk for depression. This Essential rests on the human needs of dignity and meaning:
- Dignity is the sense of being respected and valued.
- Meaning in the workplace can refer to the sense of broader purpose and significance of one’s work."
