One day you enter the office (or Slack, pick yours) and realize that your startup team has grown from 10 friends to 70 co-workers. Do you even know all the newcomers by name? Do you recognize them by the Gmail profile pictures of their cats? If you can’t, it’s time to organize a team social. Perhaps, you can even find one where pets can mingle.
Team Socials in San Francisco: What is There to Do?
With its rich heritage, San Francisco bursts with cultural diversity. The city has no lack of engaging activities that will entertain even the most skeptical engineer on your team.
We’ve organized the activities into 5 major groups:
- Cooking and baking
- Drink crafting (and tasting)
- Arts and crafts
- Fun skills
Cooking and Baking Classes
Nothing brings people closer than cooking together. It’s a true team building activity. A study conducted by Kevin Kniffin reveals that shared meals point to team bonding and are positively associated with team performance. Plus there is always an element of learning: even with a good old pizza making class. But if you had enough pizza deliveries in the last couple of years, try making sushi, baking croissants or designing your own charcuterie or cheese board.
Shaken, not Stirred
The second group of team social events is a proven icebreaker—drink crafting. It may or may not include alcohol (think latte art class or a tea ceremony) but it’s a sure way to develop communication and empathy in your co-workers. You can start a cocktail competition and give prizes for the best creation. Alternatively, your team can go on a brewery tour and sample a couple (dozen?) of flights. Don’t see a particular beverage-involving activity on our website? Contact us to discuss your options!
Let’s Get Creative
There are nearly zero downsides to an art activity. The only one we could think of is potentially the result of your artistic expression… although you can always blame it on the fashionable abstractism. Art can take many forms and shapes, so your team can try their hand at pottery, soap and candle making, perfume blending, embroidery, calligraphy, painting and many other activities. Browse our San Francisco arts and crafts page to get some ideas. And if you ever want to combine a team art session with wine tasting, we can organize that, too!
You want a team social to be fun but if your team has just shipped a new product / feature / project, you might want a relaxing activity instead. How about massage therapy? Stretching or yoga session with a certified instructor? Perhaps, even a boat or paddling adventure? The goal of a wellness-promoting activity is to make your employees happier. Even if they don’t communicate much during the activity (as they shouldn’t while being massaged), they will feel more relaxed and refreshed (and ready for a new sprint).
Parks and Recreation
You can, of course, rewatch all 7 seasons of said series as part of team bonding and smirking exercise or you can gather in Alamo Square or Golden Gate Park to learn some new skills—anything from axe throwing to telescope gazing. Fresh air and physical activity are the fastest way to improve well-being. Isn’t that what you want for your co-workers?
